      About the PSIR Optional

Political Science and International Relations (PSIR) is one of the most popular UPSC optional subjects due to its substantial overlap with General Studies , Essay, and the Personality Test. The syllabus is relatively concise, conceptually rich, and allows effective integration of current affairs.

The syllabus is divided into two papers.

Paper I covers Political Theory and Indian Politics, including concepts such as justice, liberty, equality, democracy, ideologies like liberalism and Marxism, major Western political thinkers, the Indian Constitution, federalism, Parliament, judiciary, political parties, and social movements.

Paper II focuses on Comparative Politics and International Relations, encompassing theories of the state, political economy, globalization, international relations theories, India's foreign policy, India's relations with major powers and neighbours, and international organizations.
